Celebrating Earth Day 2022 at CitySuites

Back in 2020, CitySuites recognised the importance of setting ambitious sustainable objectives in order to help protect our planet. In order to show our dedication to protecting the environment, we laid out a series of sustainable promises which we aimed to achieve by the end of 2022.

We have hit many of our goals already and are proud of what we’ve achieved as an aparthotel so far. If you choose to stay at CitySuites, you're staying at an aparthotel in Manchester that is committed to going the extra mile for the environment and invests in active change.

For Earth Day 2022, which takes place on Friday 22nd April, we wanted to share our progress (so far) with you.

100% renewable electricity energy

As part of our Environmental Social Governance (ESG) commitments in 2020, we pledged to procure 100% renewable energy at the end of our existing electricity contracts. That time has now come, and we are proud to say we have fully switched to 100% renewable electricity energy across both CitySuites buildings.

CitySuites’ Switch Off Policy

At CitySuites, we operate a Switch Off Policy where we ask and encourage guests to switch off all lights, electricals, and air conditioning before leaving their apartment. This also extends to all employees across both buildings. We have also replaced all of our high energy lights in the stairwells and outside lighting to low energy LED lights which come on via a motion sensor.

Saving water

Currently we have Blue water restrictors in both CitySuites and CitySuites II buildings which reduces the water flow to 6 L/min, a reduction of 33% for our basin taps and showers. Previously, we had Yellow water restrictors which reduced the water flow to 9 L/min.

Our social responsibility

As part of our environmental commitment, we also recognise our responsibility to be socially conscious and give back as much as possible to our local community and beyond through social responsibility initiatives.
CitySuites has been a proud Mustard Tree partner since 2018. The charity helps the local people of Greater Manchester who are vulnerable, isolated or in need of financial support to change their lives through securing better accommodation and economic wellbeing. We collect items that have been left by guests, and if they are not identified or claimed, we donate them to Mustard Tree.

We also work with Charity Escapes by supplying free night stays to charities hosting fundraising events. And in the office, we have held bake sales for charities including Cancer Research UK, as well as volunteering for Cash for Kids’ Mission Christmas in 2021.

Most recently, we held a raffle in March 2022 to raise money for the British Red Cross – Ukrainian Crisis Appeal. Prizes included a two-night stay at CitySuites and a three-course dinner for two at Embankment Kitchen. We sold 134 tickets for £10 each, raising £1,340 for the appeal.

More plant-based menu options

Our on-site restaurant, Embankment Kitchen, has a seasonal menu, aiming to make the most of in-season fruits and vegetables and source as far as possible from local suppliers. Head Chef Marika Healey is passionate about seasonal fresh flavours and ensuring there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian menu options. Our current Spring Menu has a pulled BBQ jackfruit burger, wild mushroom and leek vegan pastry tart, aubergine & lentil ragu, and a vegan chocolate and beetroot brownie with orange sorbet.

Staff training on sustainability and best practice

During their induction to the company, all new CitySuites employees will take an environmental awareness course – something that all existing staff completed upon its implementation. As well as this, all employees have signed a training document that outlines the CitySuites Environmental Policy and objectives, following managing waste guidelines, and how to raise environmental concerns.

As well as all of this, staff and guests are encouraged to recycle using the bins provided in both our buildings. All of our suppliers are vetted for their environmental credentials to ensure their sustainability and compliance with the Modern Slavery Act. Our commitment to the environment comes from the very top and we are inspected annually by an environmental consultancy to ensure we are meeting our goals.
