Key events in Manchester in 2022


We’ll be honest – there is never a bad time to visit Manchester.

As one of the UK’s most exciting cities for food, music, sport, festivals, science, fashion, etc., there is always something happening in Manchester. With rejuvenation and new openings aplenty, Manchester is one of the UK's most interesting and dynamic cities. 

CitySuites is no stranger to this. In October 2021, we opened our second luxury aparthotel in Manchester, and in December 2021, we launched Embankment Café. Both CitySuites II and Embankment Cafe are located next door to CitySuites, right in the heart of Manchester.

Looking ahead in 2022 generally, it seems there is more to be excited about in Manchester than ever before. We've selected some of the key dates to add to your diary to make the most of 2022 in Manchester!

January-February 2022

Strictly Come Dancing – AO Arena – 29th & 30th January

After Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice were crowned queen and king of the ballroom in Strictly Come Dancing, the full line-up for the tour has been revealed. The winners will be joined by celebrities Sara Davies, Max George, AJ Odudu, Tilly Ramsay, Rhys Stephenson and John Whaite, and their respective professional partners. This glitzy, sparkly show will surely brighten up the dull winter months!

John Bishop – AO Arena – 16th January and 25th & 26th February

The Scouse legend comes to Manchester in early 2022, performing his ‘Right Here, Right Now’ show at The Lowry on January 16th, and at the AO Arena in Manchester on February 25th and 26th.

Dave – AO Arena – 24th February

After a brilliant set at Manchester’s Parklife festival in September 2021, Dave returns to the city for his ‘We’re All Alone In This Together’ tour in 2022.

March-April 2022

UEFA Champions League – Round of 16 – 9th & 15th March

The fixtures for the next stage of the UEFA Champions League were recently announced, and then announced again due to a technical problem with the software. Both Manchester City and Manchester United have qualified for the knock-out Round of 16. Manchester City will face Sporting Lisbon at home on Wednesday 9th March at 8pm, while Manchester United will play Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford on Tuesday 15th March. Winners will advance to the quarter finals!

Stormzy – AO Arena – 19th March

Having been rescheduled from 2021, the mighty Stormzy will play Manchester’s AO Arena on 19th March 2022. This long-awaited show is sure to be incredible!

Manchester Marathon – 3rd April

Returning to its traditional springtime of the year, the Manchester Marathon takes place on Sunday 3rd April 2022. At the time of writing, the event was still taking entries, so if your legs are feeling up to it, you can enter here! Two-person and four-person relays are also an option if you can’t quite manage the full marathon alone.

Dua Lipa – AO Arena – 15th April 

Bringing her Future Nostalgia tour to Manchester on Friday 15th April 2022, Dua Lipa comes to the AO Arena, just down the road from CitySuites. Joining her as support is singer-songwriter Griff. This show is sure to be amazing.

May 2022

Blondie – AO Arena – 1st May

Blondie are in Manchester with their ‘Against The Odds’ tour, their first UK tour in 5 years. Performing at the AO Arena on Sunday 1st May 2022, Blondie will be joined by special guest Johnny Marr! “Having collaborated with Johnny on Blondie’s last album, ‘Pollinator’, and with plans for a new collaboration on our next album, we are looking forward to a long overdue return to the UK,” said frontwoman, Debbie Harry.

RuPaul’s Drag Race – AO Arena – 19th May

‘Werq The World’ with RuPaul’s Drag Race at the AO Arena in May 2022! The queens are back for this fourth version of their tour which features a time warp that’s as glamourous as it is outrageous. This time, the queens, including Michelle Visage, Asia O’Hara and Kameron Michaels, must travel through iconic periods of time in order to make their way back to 2022.

Great Manchester Run – 22nd May

The Great Manchester Run returns in 2022, winding its way through the buzzing streets of Manchester. The televised event takes place on Sunday 22nd May and has options to run either 10km (for runners aged 15+) or a half marathon (17+). The event is known for its fantastic atmosphere and crowd support, so if you’re looking for a challenge in 2022, look no further!

Neighbourhood Weekender – 28th to 29th May

Taking place at Victoria Park in Warrington, Neighbourhood Weekender is back in 2022 from 28th to 29th May. Headliners include Courteeners, Blossoms and Kasabian, with a whole host of other acts set to take the stage over the weekend. If you’re attending the festival, consider booking Monday off work and staying at CitySuites for some R&R with our luxury facilities!

June 2022

Liam Gallagher – Etihad Stadium – 1st June

Billed as a “very special homecoming gig”, Liam Gallagher, one of City’s most famous fans, will play at their home of the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 1st June 2022. The event will come just after the release of his third album, ‘C’mon You Know’, which comes out on 27th May. He will be supported by The Streets and Goat Girl,

Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday – Friday 3rd June

Not so much an event, but just a reminder that we get an extra Bank Holiday in the UK in 2022! As well as the traditional Spring bank holiday on Thursday 2nd June, we also have the Platinum Jublilee bank holiday on Friday 3rd, marking 70 years of the Queen’s reign. A bumper 4-day weekend of celebrations is planned, so get yourself booked in to CitySuites to make the most of this historic occasion.

Ed Sheeran – Etihad Stadium – 9th to 12th June

Ed Sheeran is bringing his ‘+ - = ÷ x Tour’ – also known as The Mathematics Tour – to Manchester for 4 nights in June 2022, from the 9th to the 12th. Taking place at the Etihad Stadium, two dates were announced initially, but two more have been added due to high demand. The tour is supporting his = (equals) album, which was released in 2021.

Parklife – Heaton Park – 11th and 12th June

Back to its usual spot in June, Parklife festival returns to Heaton Park in 2022! The line-up is yet to be announced, but across the 8 stages there is sure to be some brilliant artists. Last year, performances came from the likes of Dave, Megan Thee Stallion, and Skepta.

Foo Fighters – Old Trafford Cricket Ground – 25th June

American rock legends Foo Fighters are performing in Manchester on 25th June on their 2022 UK stadium tour. The tour will be their first UK shows since they headlined Reading and Leeds Festival in 2019. Having released their latest album ‘Medicine at Midnight’ in 2021, they will play at Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground before performing in Birmingham and London.

Sounds of the City – Castlefield Bowl – 28th June

Bringing some of the best in rock and indie music to Manchester, Sounds of the City takes place at Castlefield Bowl on Saturday 28th June. Headliners include Pixies, Foals, James, Sam Fender, and Crowded House.

July-August 2022

Northern Fashion Week – Manchester Central – 4th to 9th July

Celebrating the best of the north’s fashion industry, Northern Fashion Week takes place from 4th July at Manchester Central. Featuring catwalk shows, seminars, interactive stands, networking opportunities, an awards ceremony, and much more, it promises to be a brilliant promises.

BlueDot Festival – Jodrell Bank Observatory, Cheshire – 21st to 24th July

After two years off, the intergalactic mezze of science, culture and art is back. BlueDot Festival takes place at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, offering 4 days of cosmic entertainment. In 2022, this includes a performance of orchestral arrangements from Björk, a series of talks and panel discussions from leading scholars, and an immersive experience called The Luminarium.

Pride Weekend – Manchester – 27th to 30th August

We may be biased, but we believe that Manchester Pride is the best LGBTQ+ event in the UK. Every year, the Manchester Pride charity puts on a fantastic festival that celebrates inclusivity and the advancements in equality in our society. There are different strands to get involved in, from activism, to arts & culture, to youth & family.

September-October 2022

Joe Lycett – AO Arena – 20th September

One of the UK’s funniest comedians, Joe Lycett comes to the AO Arena on 20th September 2022 with his show ‘More, More, More!’. Lycett is also set to host the new series of Travel Man on Channel 4 and, if the Christmas special set in Iceland with Bill Bailey is anything to go by, the series is going to be a hit.

Swedish House Mafia – AO Arena – 29th September

As part of their Paradise Again European tour, Swedish House Mafia are popping into the AO Arena on 29th September 2022. Grab your comfiest trainers for dancing and prepare to get sweaty at this gig! Then, we recommend relaxing at CitySuites with our luxury pool and jacuzzi… the best way to unwind!

Manchester Science Festival – October

Although the exact date is yet to be announced, the Manchester Science Festival is already on our radar for 2022. It’s due to take place in October, and is certainly a highlight in the city’s cultural calendar. With a range of talks, exhibitions, debates and activities planned, this event will be enjoyed be adults and children alike.

Oktoberfest Albert Square – 8th to 17th October

If you’re unsure about booking flights to Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest, why not skip the hassle of the airport and say “Prost!” in Manchester? The German festivities are due to take place from the 8th to 17th October where you’ll be able to feast upon as much bratwurst and sauerkraut as your heart desires. There will be a giant tent featuring authentic Oktoberfest decorations and steins of delicious German beer. Juhu!

November-December 2022

Hits Radio Live – AO Arena – 11th November

Bringing together some of the best names in music today, the Hits Radio Live event will take place on Friday 11th November 2022. The event has been rescheduled from May 2021, but the long wait for the event will surely be worth it!

Manchester Christmas Markets – November/December

In 2021, the Manchester Christmas Markets returned after a year off and they were better than ever! Clusters of Christmas market stalls were set up around the city centre offering food, drink and a delightful array of gifts and other items. We are sure the Manchester Christmas Markets will be back in 2022 – date TBC!

Westlife – AO Arena – 24th November

The boys are back in town, bringing their ‘The Wild Dreams Tour’ to the AO Arena on 24th November 2022. Westlife will be performing all their hits, so whether you’re a new fan or old, this is a show not to be missed!

The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan – Opera House – 10th to 31st December

We know embers of Christmas 2021 haven’t quite gone out yet, but it’s good to be prepared… and you can prepare for Christmas 2022 by getting your seats booked at the panto now! ‘The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan’ comes to Manchester’s Opera House from the 10th to 31st December 2022 and promises to be a swashbuckling adventure to Neverland like you’ve never seen before!

Rod Stewart – AO Arena – 14th December

Supporting the release of his 31st – yes, 31st! – studio album, Sir Rod Stewart hits the road with a huge UK tour in 2022. He’ll be performing at Manchester’s AO Arena on 14th December with a mix of new hits and all the classics from back in the day.
