Make the most of your May bank holiday in Manchester

With almost back-to-back bank holidays, springtime in the UK is one of the best times of the year. The extra day off gives the weekend a lush holiday feel, and if you're clever with your annual leave, you might not have to work a full 5-day week until June...

The early May bank holiday takes place on Monday 2nd May 2022 and there is loads happening across Manchester. From musical tours and cultural festivals, to beer, whisky and cocktail tasting, you can create the perfect bank holiday weekend for yourself.

Sounds From the Other City 2022

When: Sunday 1st May

Where? Chapel Street, Salford

Distance: 15-minutes’ walk from CitySuites

Taking over Chapel Street on Sunday 1st May, Sounds from the Other City brings an exciting programme of music, art and entertainment to Salford. From a hypnotic, strobe-soaked audio-visual installation, to stripped-back music sets and 90s RnB powerhouses, to an art installation of typewriter drawings, there is something for everyone at this creative festival.

Vintage Kilo Sale at Manchester Cathedral

When? Monday 2nd May

Where? Manchester Cathedral

Distance: A 2-minute walk across the bridge from CitySuites

Said to be the UK’s biggest Vintage Kilo Sale, this event takes place on Bank Holiday Monday at Manchester Cathedral, just up the road from CitySuites. Grab a biodegradable bag on your way in and then pick and mix your vintage choices, all for £20 per kilo. There will be up to 9 tonnes of handpicked vintage stock at the event and the rails will be replenished throughout the day.

There is a small cost for tickets, including just £3 for early bird tickets, but just think of the potential unique vintage items you could find. Book here.

Bury Pride 2022

When? Saturday 30th April

Where: Castle Armory Drill Hall, Castle Street, Bury, BL9 0LB

Distance: A 40-minute metro tram ride from CitySuites

Promising to be even bigger and better than any previous year, Bury Pride 2022 is taking place on the Saturday of the May Bank Holiday weekend. At the time of writing, acts and stalls are yet to be announced, but one thing we do know is that you do not want to miss this year’s Rainbow Train. Setting off from Bolton Street Bury, the carriages of #Trainbow will be full of colourful performances by local drag acts, musicians, and entertainers.

There is also a carnival-themed Walking Rainbow Parade, lead by The Mayor and Cllr. Tim Pickstone, which will celebrate the diversity and equality within Bury. Don’t miss this!

Table Manners with Jessie & Lennie Ware

When? Sunday 1st May

Where? The Bridgewater Hall

Distance: 20-minutes walking from CitySuites or a 5-10 minute taxi journey

The award winning podcast Table Manners from singer Jessie Ware and her mum Lennie makes its live debut at The Bridgewater Hall on the May bank holiday weekend. Having just launched series 12 of the podcast, Table Manners has proved to be a smash hit with top tier celeb guests including Ed Sheeran, Dolly Parton and Elizabeth Olsen. And their live tour will be no different, as there will be a mystery special guest joining them in Manchester!

Whisky Tasting Manchester

When? Friday 29th April, 7pm-9pm

Where: The Castlefield Hotel

Distance: 20 minutes walking from CitySuites - or 10 minutes in a taxi

Put a fire in your belly and start your May Bank Holiday with a whisky tasting experience. During this event, you’ll be blind tasting six different styles of whisky, including scotch, American bourbon, Irish whiskey, and some other unique whiskeys from around the world. You will be guided through the tasting where you’ll learn more about cultural and stylistic differences, as well as understanding the various tasting notes.

The Comedy Store at Escape to Freight Island

When? Thursday 28th April, 7:30pm to 10pm

Where: Escape to Freight Island, Depot Mayfield

Distance: A 25-minute walk through the city centre from CitySuites

Tickle your funny bone with a visit to Escape to Freight Island for their new partnership with The Comedy Store. This exciting collaboration promises to bring some Comedy Store favourites, as well as a few famous faces to Depot Mayfield for this weekly residency. The show starts at 7:30pm, but we recommend arriving a little earlier so you can make the most of the all the glorious food and drink that Escape to Freight Island has to offer.

Line-up TBC. Tickets guarantee you a seat but tables are first come, first served.

The Manchester Music Walkabout Tour

When? Saturday 30th April at 1pm

Where? The Bridgewater Hall

Distance: 20-minutes walking from CitySuites or a 5-10 minute taxi ride

Whether you’re visiting Manchester and want to know more about the music scene, or simply want to get in the mood before your Bank Holiday shenanigans, the Manchester Music Walkabout Tour is the place to be. Starting at 1pm at The Bridgewater Hall, the tour will take you through the highlights of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s – of which there are many – from The Bee Gees, to Joy Division, to The Stone Roses.

With the best stories and anecdotes, this tour will equally fascinate, move, and amuse you. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.

Japanese Painting Workshop

When? Saturday 30th April

Where? Chapter One Books

Distance: A 15-minute walk down Market Street from CitySuites

Get creative and expand your artistic skills this May bank holiday with a Japanese Painting Workshop. Led by an experienced local artist, the workshop will teach you how to paint using traditional materials like bamboo brushes, sumi ink, rice paper board, Japanese paints, or stretched silk on a bamboo frame or fan. You'll learn the different Japanese painting techniques by exploring the country's art movements throughout the centuries. 

The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with a little more artistic experience. Materials are supplied and you'll be able to take away your creation at the end. Tickets available here!

Cloudwater Brew Co. – Tour & Tasting

Where? Cloudwater Brew Co.

Distance: A 30-minute walk or 10-minute taxi from CitySuites

Learn a little more about Cloudwater's beer with a tour of their brewery on the May bank holiday weekend. As well as a tour and Q&A session, you'll also receive 4 pours of their freshest beer and 10% off all Cloudwater Draft and Takeout for a month after your tour.
